The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) did not support the imposition of sanctions against Ukraine's fifth president, MP Petro Poroshenko, although it does not consider him "white and fluffy." The lifetime restrictions were imposed on the initiative of the Cabinet of Ministers, but Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal did not sign the motion.

This was reported by ZN.UA, citing its own sources familiar with the situation. The article states that the sanctions against Ihor Kolomoisky, Kostyantyn Zhevago, Hennadiy Boholyubov and Viktor Medvedchuk were supported by the approval of the SSU. However, the SSU did not support the measures against Poroshenko.

The initiative to impose sanctions against Poroshenko came from the Cabinet of Ministers, based on information from the new head of the State Financial Monitoring Service (Finmon), Philip Pronin,. At the same time, according to a government source, Shmyhal actually disclaimed responsibility for this decision.

"It was Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Yulia Svyrydenko who reported on the issue at the Cabinet of Ministers and signed all the documents, not Finance Minister Sergiy Marchenko, whose system includes Finmon. Yulia Svyrydenko also signed the submission to the NSDC, not Prime Minister Shmyhal, who took a prudent step aside," the article says.

According to a source in the National Security and Defense Council, the sanctions against Poroshenko were supposed to be imposed in early January, on January 3-5. The decision, according to the source, had to be postponed because the head of the SSU, Vasyl Malyuk, did not approve the issue.

This, according to the source, "made Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky very angry." "Malyuk's team prepared a ten-point memo for the president, outlining all the risks of such a step against Poroshenko, including the dubious legality of this decision, internal confrontation in society, a parliamentary crisis, the reaction of international partners, etc." the article says.

Sources in the SSU explained that "no one in the agency considers Petro Poroshenko 'white and fluffy'. However, they "clearly understand" that such a decision against the backdrop of external challenges could lead to a split in society, and therefore did not support the sanctions.

The author also draws attention to a strange coincidence. Right on the day the decision to impose sanctions on Poroshenko was made, the SSU announced the exposure of Dmytro Kozyura, the head of the SSU's Anti-Terrorist Headquarters. "Particularly interesting is the fact that the latter is the nephew of Colonel-General Alexei Kozyura of the Russian FSB. However, an even bigger highlight was the fact that Vasyl Malyuk personally took part in the exposure of the traitor," the article says.

Government sources believe that in this way, Malyuk allegedly decided to "play it safe" and "protect himself from Zelensky." At the same time, the SSU assures that the coincidence is coincidental, and investigators were waiting for another sum to be transferred to Kozyura so that another episode could appear in the case. "One way or another, old-timers of Bankova Street are very surprised that Vasyl Malyuk allowed himself to refuse the president's wishes, and the entire implementation of the deal fell to the Financial Monitoring Service," the article says.

As OBOZ.UA reported earlier, the NBU answered whether Poroshenko's bank would be nationalized due to sanctions. We are talking about the International Investment Bank (IIB), in which the MP and the fifth president owns 64.98% of shares.
