What holidays are celebrated on March 5

Orthodox holidays

On March 5, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of the martyrs Conon of Isauria, Onesimus, and Iraida in the new style. These saints lived in different historical periods, but they are united by their unwavering faith in Christ and the martyrdom they suffered for their beliefs.

St. Conon was born in the third century in the city of Bethany in Isauria (Asia Minor). From a young age he was distinguished by his pious life, and later received the gift of miracles. During the reign of Emperor Decius, when Christians were severely persecuted, Conon was tortured. He was forced to renounce his faith in Christ and sacrifice to pagan gods, but he remained steadfast. St. Conon bravely endured all the suffering and died from his wounds. He is revered as the patron saint of farmers and gardeners, as well as an intercessor against illness and misfortune.

Little is known about the life of St. Onesimus. He also suffered for his faith in the third century, during the reign of Emperor Maximian. Onesimus was martyred by order of the emperor.

Martyr Iraida suffered during the persecution of Christians. She was also martyred for her faith. She is venerated as the patron saint of women and children.

International Day for the Promotion of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction

This day was established by the United Nations to

  • to inform the public about the consequences of the use of WMD;
  • to promote international efforts aimed at reducing and eliminating WMD.

World Energy Efficiency Day

The idea of establishing this day came up at an international conference on energy efficiency held in Austria in 1998. Since then, March 5 has become a symbol of global efforts to raise awareness of energy conservation and promote energy-efficient technologies.
