How to separate herring from bones in a second: a simple life hack for housewives

Kateryna YagovychNews

Herring is one of the most popular fish in home cooking. It's perfect for salads, sandwiches, or as an appetizer on its own. However, cleaning it can be a real challenge, especially if you want to get rid of the bones quickly. The usual process is time-consuming and requires care.

A simple method that will allow you to get a clean fillet in seconds was shared by food blogger Valeriia with the nickname valeria pytel on Instagram. Everything is very elementary.

How to quickly clean herring from bones

1. Take a fresh or lightly salted herring. Place it on a cutting board and pat it dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

2. Cut off the head and remove the insides if they are still inside.

3. Make a neat cut along the belly of the herring and open it like a book. Remove the black film to prevent the meat from having a bitter taste.

4. Cut off the very tip of the tail to make the next step easier.

5. Grab the herring with both hands by the tail. Gently but confidently scroll.

6. After scrolling, pull the skin sharply in different directions. The fillet should be easily separated from the backbone. If small bones remain, they can be quickly removed with tweezers or a knife.

7. Remove the skin, starting from the head, and gently pull it towards the tail. After that, rinse the fillet with water, dry it, and cut it for serving.
