Nord Stream 2 launch will not lead to peace in Ukraine - Bild on Germany's intention to disrupt the launch of the gas pipeline
Germany opposed the intention of the United States and Russia to launch the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. In particular, they believe that the sale of Russian gas under the American brand will strengthen the symbolic connection between Trump, his MAGA supporters, and the Kremlin regime, but will not help end the war in Ukraine. Therefore, they are looking for ways to block the Russian gas pipeline.
This is stated in the article by Bild. Its authors note that, according to CDU MP (Christian Democratic Union of Germany, one of the largest parties in Germany) Roderich Kiesewetter, Nord Stream 2 will never be able to become part of peace and will not lead to peace negotiations, but rather the opposite."
"Independence from Russian gas is of strategic importance for Germany's security, and the government is firmly committed to this position. In addition, Nord Stream 2 is not certified and, therefore, has no legal permission to operate," the German Ministry of Economy said.
At the same time, analysts emphasize that Berlin considers the conclusion of a corresponding agreement between Washington and Moscow to be a "realistic scenario." In this regard, they are looking for levers to block the Russian gas pipeline.
Earlier, Bild reported that secret talks have been underway in Switzerland for several weeks to resume Russian gas supplies to Germany with the help of American investors. At the same time, according to the Financial Times, the plan provides for "involvement of the Trump team in the process - as part of unofficial efforts to conclude a peace agreement in Ukraine."
At the same time, it is emphasized that the administration of US President Donald Trump himself
- are aware of these negotiations;
- perceive them as a step toward improving relations between the United States and Russia.
At the same time, the EU believes that the launch of the pipeline will not help the European Union diversify its gas supply sources. Therefore, this project is contrary to the interests of the bloc.
"Our position is very clear: "Nord Stream 2 is not a project of common interest. It does not diversify energy sources in the EU," said Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a spokeswoman for the European Commission.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, according to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, the Nord Stream gas pipeline will be launched in 2025. And the owner of the Russian "pipe" will not be the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, but an investor from the United States.
