We wanted to show the "feast of the gods" on the Olympus: the organizers of the Olympics apologized for the parody of the "Last Supper"

The organizers of the 2024 Olympics in France have apologized for a drag queen show parodying Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper" fresco. Instead, they noted that with this action they wanted to show the "feast of the gods" on the Olympus.

This was reported by The Guardian. This performance resembled the Gospel scene of Jesus Christ's last supper with the apostles before the crucifixion.

The participants of the performance sat down at the table in the same positions as the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ. On the plate was a singer in the image of the Greek god Dionysus. In this way, the directors wanted to show the "absurdity of violence between people."

However, the creative performance was criticized by conservative politicians, representatives of religious organizations, online commentators, and even billionaire Elon Musk. They saw ridicule of religious symbols and disrespect for Christianity. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban even spoke of the "moral emptiness of the West."

However, according to the organizers in the X network, the parody of the biblical scene, performed against the backdrop of the Seine River, was intended to interpret Dionysus and raise awareness "of the absurdity of violence between people."

"There was no intention to disrespect any religious group. The skit at the opening ceremony was meant to promote tolerance in society. We believe that this goal has been achieved. If people were offended by something, we are very sorry," said Anne Dekamp, spokeswoman for the 2024 Olympics.

Opening ceremony choreographer Thomas Jolly also denied that the skit was a parody of The Last Supper.

"The idea was to show a big pagan party associated with the gods of Olympus. We wanted to talk about diversity," he added.

It is worth noting that France has a rich Catholic heritage, but also has a long tradition of secularism and anti-clericalism. Blasphemy is legal and is considered by many to be the main pillar of freedom of speech. Supporters of the film praised its "message to the masses" about inclusiveness and tolerance.

As a reminder, the video with the highlights of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics has already been removed from the organizers' YouTube page. The ceremony took place on July 26 on the Seine River.

In the video, transgender actors parodied Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, which offended Christians around the world. The clip gathered a lot of angry comments with indignation.
