Russia convenes urgent meeting of UN Security Council: the aggressor put in its place and reminded of occupation
Since last week, violence by the Russian military has escalated in Ukraine. Numerous localities were shelled over the week, with at least 12 civilians killed and 60 others injured as a result of Russian strikes. There is a baby among the dead.
The Russian delegation to the UN was reminded of this by UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo. The meeting of the UN Security Council was convened by Moscow because of the attack on occupied Lysychansk.
Regarding Lysychansk, DiCarlo emphasized that the city is under temporary occupation by Russia. At the same time, she added, there are reports of increased Russian strikes on the territory of Ukraine.
As an example, DiCarlo cited Kherson, where four civilians were killed by Russians on February 5. Another person was killed in the Sumy region. The attacks that led to the killing of Ukrainian civilians were carried out in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, she added.
"On Tuesday, it became known that a two-month-old baby was killed and his mother was wounded when a Russian missile hit a hotel building in the Kharkiv region. Two other women were wounded. Attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur, are prohibited under international law. They are unacceptable," DiCarlo said.
According to her, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the UN has registered 30,041 civilian casualties in Ukraine. 10,382 people have been killed, including 579 children. 19,659 people have been injured, including 1,285 children.
DiCarlo's words were primarily addressed to the Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya, who accused the Armed Forces and the United States of attacking a "peaceful cafe" in Lysychansk.
