He voted against the allocation of aid to Ukraine: Trump announces Mike Waltz as national security adviser
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has officially announced Florida Congressman Mike Waltz as National Security Advisor in his upcoming administration. Previously, he voted against the allocation of aid to Ukraine.
This was reported by CNN. Trump emphasized that Mike Waltz has significant experience in government, including in the White House and the Pentagon.
"Congressman Mike Waltz has been appointed to serve as my National Security Advisor. Mike is the first Green Beret to be elected to Congress and has previously served in the White House and the Pentagon," Trump said.
He also noted that his new adviser is a committed supporter of the "America First" foreign policy and is committed to "peace through strength."
Mike Waltz is actively involved in US security issues, particularly in the context of confronting China. He is one of the harshest critics of China in the Republican Party.
However, his views on assistance to Ukraine are less clear. In 2022, Waltz was in favor of providing Ukraine with more weapons. However, his position has changed. In 2023, he wrote an article for Fox News where he stated that "the era of blank checks for Ukraine from Congress is over." He also voted against an additional $60 billion in aid to Ukraine in April 2024.
The congressman also expressed doubts about the feasibility of Ukraine's accession to NATO, noting that at the moment Ukraine cannot make a significant contribution to the collective security of the alliance. He said that such a step could draw the United States into a direct conflict with Russia.
To recap, Trump emphasized that there would be no place for former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the White House.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, even before officially taking office, Trump announced two more key figures in his future administration. In particular, he intends to appoint Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as US Ambassador to the United Nations, and former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Tom Homan as "border czar," giving him broad powers to deport illegal immigrants.
