In the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, Kursk is a very strong bargaining chip. However, it was unexpected how the Ukrainian military's seizure and retention of a part of the Russian region's territory affected politicians in southern countries.

This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with United News on January 2, 2025. He assessed the significance of the Kursk operation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces and called it an important move.

"Kursk is a very strong trump card in all negotiations. Especially with countries that are very important to us, especially with the countries of the Global South. I never thought that it would have such a big impact on them because they were so influenced by the 'invincible Russia'," he said.

Zelenskyy also said that sending North Korean troops to the territory of Kursk was a tactical mistake by the Russians.

"They took the North Korean contingent. Where did they send it? To the Kursk region. I think this is their tactical mistake. I wish them more of them," Zelenskyy said.

He emphasized that those 12,000 Koreans from the DPRK could not change the situation in the Kursk region.

"All this works against Russia, all this looks like a strong argument for us," the president added.

Zelenskyy called the Kursk operation an important move by the Ukrainian side in the war, which became a turning point.

On December 31, the Ukrainian military occupied a village in the Kursk region, which, together with Russian troops, was held by DPRK soldiers. Ukrainian defenders cleared the village of the enemy.

On January 2, the Armed Forces of Ukraine also successfully attacked the Kursk region. Ukrainian soldiers attacked the location of the Russian occupation army in the village of Ivanovskoye.
