"We are waiting for the world's reaction, Russia must respond": Zelenskyy showed the fire that the occupiers set at the ZNPP
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy showed footage of the fire that the Russian occupiers started at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. He called on the world and the IAEA to respond to the terrorist state's provocation.
The head of state posted the footage from ZNPP on Telegram. They show a huge black column of smoke coming from Nikopol.
"Currently, the radiation indicators are normal. But as long as Russian terrorists retain control over the nuclear power plant, the situation is not and cannot be normal. From the first day of the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Russia has been using it solely to blackmail Ukraine, the whole of Europe and the world," Zelenskyy emphasized.
"We are waiting for the world's reaction, waiting for the IAEA's reaction. Russia must be responsible for this. Only Ukrainian control over the Zaporizhzhia NPP can guarantee a return to normalcy and complete safety," the President added.
The head of the Dnipropetrovs'k Regional Nuclear Power Plant Authority, Serhii Lysak, wrote on Telegram that the situation is currently under control with the involvement of all relevant services.
"Air measurements have shown that the radiation level has not been exceeded. We are constantly monitoring," the official said.
He urged local residents to remain calm, explaining that Russia continues to use terror, blackmail and intimidation tactics with such actions.
"And the fire they set today on the territory of Zaporizhzhia NPP is another confirmation of this," Lysak wrote.
"The world must see what the aggressor country is doing. The threat it poses goes far beyond Ukraine. Only together we can stop it. And bring the criminals to justice," the head of the OVA noted.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko reported on Telegram that as of 22:30, no changes in the radiation situation in the area of the Zaporizhzhia NPP were recorded, and no radionuclides of man-made origin were detected.
"We are intensively monitoring the situation near ZNPP. The posts of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center located near the station are working in an operational mode to ensure timely monitoring of the radiation background," the Interior Minister wrote.
Energoatom reported in Telegram that cooling tower number one caught fire at ZNPP and other process equipment was damaged.
"There are no violations of the limits and conditions of safe operation. No excesses of control levels for emissions and discharges of radioactive substances were recorded," the company said.
The probable cause of the incident was the negligence of the occupiers or the deliberate arson of the cooling tower by the Russians.
Cooling tower number one is located about a kilometer from the plant's power units. According to Energoatom, the Russians are using the plant's premises and facilities as military depots to store equipment, weapons, explosives, and military ammunition. They have placed military vehicles in the station's sheds. The cooling towers are also used as storage and concealment facilities for military equipment and ammunition, which significantly increases the risk of fires in the production facilities of the NPP.
"At the same time, we inform you that the radiation situation at the plant is within the current standards, there is currently no threat of radiation contamination to the public," the company said.
" The use of the nuclear power plant as a military base by the racists exposes the whole world to the threat of a nuclear disaster. Only the liberation of ZNPP and its transfer to the only legitimate operator, Energoatom, can guarantee the prevention of nuclear and radiation accidents, ensure its reliable and safe operation," Energoatom emphasized.
The head of the Nikopol district military administration, Yevhen Yevtushenko, said that Russians at ZNPP set fire to a large number of car tires in the facility's cooling tower. He emphasized that the fire did not occur at the plant itself.
"This may be a provocation or an attempt to create panic in the settlements on the right bank of the former reservoir. At the moment, ZNPP is operating normally, as far as possible under the occupation," wrote the head of the RPA.
ZNPP cooling towers are located at a considerable distance from the facility's power units. These are facilities for cooling water with atmospheric air.
