Russian war criminals have once again committed an atrocious crime against the Ukrainian people. They shelled Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. The occupiers struck two times with a minimal time difference and hit a multi-storey building, in particular. There are civilian casualties.
This was reported by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Telegram. According to him, Russia is trying to leave only broken and burnt stones from Pokrovsk (to watch the video, scroll to the bottom of the page).
"Two missile strikes. They hit an ordinary residential building. Unfortunately, there are victims. Rescuers and all necessary services are on the spot. People are being rescued," the Head of State said.
He stressed that Ukrainians must stop Russian terror.
"Everyone who fights for the freedom of Ukraine saves lives. Everyone in the world who helps Ukraine will defeat terrorists together with us. Russia will be held accountable for everything it has done in this terrible war," Zelenskyy said.
The head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration Pavlo Kyrylenko added that, according to preliminary data, at least one person was killed and seven others were wounded in Pokrovsk due to rocket attacks at intervals of several minutes.
"They hit the city centre: multi-storey buildings, private houses, a hotel, catering establishments, shops and administrative buildings were damaged," said the head of the RMA.
Later, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported 5 dead and 18 wounded. According to him, search and rescue operations continue.
"As of 21:20, 4 civilians were killed and 3 injured as a result of the first arrival. The deputy head of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Donetsk region was killed during the second shelling. Another 4 rescuers, 8 police officers and 3 civilians were injured. Our heroes were the first to arrive at the scene of the shelling to help people," he said.
Later, Klymenko said that as of 21:50, the number of injured had increased to 31. 19 police officers, 5 rescuers and 1 child were among them.
In addition, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported that under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation was launched in criminal proceedings on the violation of the laws and customs of war (part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
"On 7 August 2023, at about 19:15, the Russian army, allegedly using Iskander missiles, fired on residential buildings in the town of Pokrovsk. Pokrovsk," the statement said.
