De La Hoya criticises refereeing of Lomachenko-Haney fight

Former world champion in six weight categories Oscar De La Hoya called the result of the fight between Vasyl Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) and Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) unfair. The legendary boxer strongly disagreed with the judges' assessments, who unanimously recorded the American's victory.

De La Hoya expressed this opinion in an interview with InsideFighting YouTube channel. According to the former champion, he was right in the ringside area and closely watched the fight, counting at least seven rounds in favour of the Ukrainian contender.

Lomachenko Haney

"In my opinion, Lomachenko won this fight. I was there, sitting right in the centre. I like Haney. He is one of the best boxers. But Lomachenko won eight rounds to four. At worst, seven against five. I was sitting in the front row. I wanted to enjoy this fight. The fight for the title of absolute world champion. I watched the fight very carefully. And believe me: Loma won. If I were Lomachenko, I would move up in weight. Because the whole world knows that he won. And Haney probably realised in his head that he lost. It might affect him," De La Hoya said.

It is worth noting that the referee's notes, which were published after the fight, caused fierce debate among experts and fans. Lomachenko's team announced that they were lodging a protest against the outcome of the fight. In addition, the fight's punch statistics confirm that the Ukrainian won at least five rounds.

After the defeat, Vasyl Lomachenko could not contain his emotions and burst into tears while waiting for the press conference. During a flash interview in the ring, Vasyl did not mention Ukraine, refusing to thank his homeland.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, renowned boxing coach Teddy Atlas demanded that the Nevada Athletic Commission begin proceedings against one of the judges of the Lomachenko-Haney fight. It also became known how much the Ukrainian boxer earned for the fight.
