Ukrainians make it to the second round of Wimbledon 2023

Ukrainian tennis players have set a national record at the Wimbledon Open. For the first time in history, four representatives of our country simultaneously overcame the first round of the Grand Slam grass tournament in the second round.

This became known after Ukraine's top-ranked Angelina Kalinina defeated Spain's Jessica Bousas Maneiro 6-3, 6-4 at Wimbledon 2023, the Ukrainian Tennis website reports. Prior to that, Lesya Tsurenko, Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostiuk were stronger than their rivals.

The latter's success is particularly noteworthy - the 21-year-old from Kyiv defeated the eighth-ranked Maria Sakkari from Greece in a brilliant style. After losing the first game 0-6, Marta managed to turn the match around and take the next two sets, and the entire match, 7-5, 6-2.

Previously, in 2008 and 2022, Ukraine was represented in the second round of Wimbledon by three tennis players each.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, before the start of Wimbledon 2023, Russia's top-ranked player Daria Kasatkina openly condemned her country's attack on Ukraine.
