"They won't perform anymore": Russian gymnasts refuse to participate in the Olympics and end their careers
Russian rhythmic gymnasts Dina and Arina Averina have announced the end of their sports careers after previously refusing to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games under a neutral flag. The 25-year-old natives of the Novgorod region decided not to continue competing in the face of Russia's suspension from international tournaments.
The head of the All-Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation (RGF) Irina Viner said this in a commentary to the propaganda news agency R-Sport. "Today is very sad news. I'm going to cry now. Today Dina and Arina Averina informed me that they will no longer perform. We have come a long way with them. I thank them," she said.
The athletes themselves said that they do not know what they will do next. "We have a lot of plans for the future. It's a new stage in our lives, but it will be interesting and intense, though difficult. Gymnastics will remain in our hearts. We continue to participate in the show," the sisters emphasized.
It is worth noting that the Averins left Russia without an Olympic gold medal for the first time in the last quarter century. At the 2020 Games in Tokyo, Dina took silver, and her sister was fourth.
