The Usyk-Fury show will feature the return of the Russian former world champion, who boxed for the Russian Armed Forces
Russian boxer Sergey Kovalev (35-4-1, 29 KOs) will be one of the participants of the grand show on May 18, the main event of which will be the confrontation between Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) and Tyson Fury. The 40-year-old native of Kopeysk, who has been living in the United States for a long time, will make his first appearance in the ring in two years.
The news became known after the organizers of the boxing evening in Riyadh, Arabia, confirmed the full schedule of the show. Kovalev will take part in one of the warm-up fights, and his opponent will be the representative of Sweden Robin Sirvan Safar (16-0, 12 KOs).
Kolvalev decided to change his weight category from light heavyweight, where he was a three-time world champion, to heavyweight. In May 2022, he made his debut in the new division and inflicted the first defeat of his career on Bulgarian Tervel Pulev (19-1, 14 KOs), winning by unanimous decision.
It is worth noting that after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Sergey spoke out for peace in our country, but did not condemn his country's aggression. He became a two-time world champion among military personnel, defending the colors of the official club of the Russian Armed Forces, CSKA.
As a reminder, the Usyk-Fury fight was supposed to take place on February 17, but was postponed due to an autopsy on the British fighter's wound, which he received during sparring. Former middleweight world champion Carl Froch questioned the fight. And promoter Eddie Hearn intends to disrupt the rematch between the Ukrainian and the Briton.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, promoter Oleksandr Krasiuk spoke about the problem with holding the fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury on May 18. And the British representative Bob Arum has already started talking about the boxer's possible refusal to rematch.
