"Our fighter": Povetkin attributed Usyk's success to Russia
Former world heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin expressed the absurd idea that Russia is directly related to the success of Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs). The representative of the aggressor country called the Ukrainian boxer "our fighter" and attributed him to the "school of the Soviet Union."
Povetkin said this in an interview with the Ushatayka YouTube channel. At the same time, according to Povetkin, he considers the Ukrainian's victory over Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) to be absolutely deserved, and all the talk by the Briton and some experts about the allegedly unfair judging to be unfounded.
"I watched the first fight, yes. What can I say: Usyk is good. He won with dignity. Was Fury condemned? No, I don't agree with that. I think Usyk won. I will be rooting for Usyk in the rematch. Despite everything, he is still our fighter, the school of the Soviet Union (Russia considers itself the successor to the USSR - ed.), so this is not even discussed," Povetkin said. It should be noted that our heavyweight began boxing in 2002, 16 years after the collapse of the USSR.
We remind you that in the first fight, Usyk defeated Fury by split decision - 114:113, 113:114, 115:112 - and became the absolute world heavyweight champion.
A month after the fight , the Ukrainian was forced to give up the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt, for which Anthony Joshua (26-3, 23 KOs) and Daniel Dubois (21-2, 20 KOs) will fight on September 21.
Later it became known that the IBF left Usyk no choice. This situation angered the head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Dana White. The Ukrainian himself commented on his decision for the first time. Fury and Usyk will rematch on December 21. The fantastic prize money for the second fight is already known.
Our compatriot shared his expectations from the second fight with Tyson and responded to the accusations of cheating during the fight with Fury on May 18. In addition, Oleksandr commented on the injury he received in the fight.
The Ukrainian announced his radical plan to continue his career after the rematch with Tyson. Usyk named the most difficult moment of the fight with the Briton. Our boxer also spoke frankly about his opponent. Coach Sergey Lapin told us what he expects from his fighter' s rematch with the Briton.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, Russian boxing coach Andrey Ivichuk called Tyson Fury the winner of the upcoming rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. And the Ukrainian himself named the only boxer he is interested in fighting after the second fight with the Briton.
