A year ago, on 30 June 2022, Ukrainian defenders liberated Zmiinyi Island from the Russian occupation army. Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhnyi recalled how it happened.
He also thanked the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine posted the video on his Telegram channel.
"Exactly one year ago, on 30 June, the Security and Defence Forces liberated Zmiinyi Island from the Russian occupiers. I thank everyone who defends Ukraine," he said.

It should be added that the return of the blue and yellow national flag to Zmiinyi Island was a significant event in the history of our state and army.
On the first day of the full-scale invasion, 24 February 2022, Russian ships approached Zmiinyi and called on the Ukrainian military to lay down their arms and give them the island. At that time, the defenders of Ukraine uttered a legendary phrase: "Russian warship, f*ck you".

With air support, the Moskva missile cruiser and the Vasily Bykov corvette attacked the island. As a result, Zmiinyi was captured and its infrastructure destroyed.
On 13 April, the Ukrainian Neptune missile system struck the Moskva missile cruiser. As a result, the Russian army lost the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.
In June, fierce fighting took place around the island. On 30 June, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, said that the Russian occupiers had left the island under pressure from the Ukrainian military. The enemy, in turn, called the defeat on Zmiinyi a "gesture of goodwill".

- Captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Myroslav Hai spoke about the Russians' withdrawal from the island. According to him, the Ukrainian special operation on Zmiinyi shocked the occupiers - as a result, they were forced to make a "gesture of goodwill".
- On the night of 11 February, the enemy dropped four aerial bombs on Zmiinyi. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries.
- In this way, the occupiers sent a signal to their audience through propaganda, having nothing to boast about in reality, the OC "South" explained.
