The deputy corps of the Kyiv City Council awarded the title of "Honorary Citizen of Kyiv" to writer and literary critic Oksana Zabuzhko, whose work plays an important role in the literary and cultural development of Ukraine. This decision was made on the initiative of the European Solidarity faction.

This was reported by Maryna Poroshenko, the leader of the EU faction in the Kyiv City Council, on her Facebook page. Zabuzhko's books have been translated into dozens of languages, and one of her novels became the first bestseller in independent Ukraine.

"Oksana Stefanivna, without exaggeration, is one of the most famous personalities in modern Ukrainian literature. Her work has a powerful influence on the literary and cultural development of Ukraine. Her books are translated into dozens of languages," Maryna Poroshenko wrote.

The MP also noted that in addition to her work, Zabuzhko actively speaks out on socio-political issues, defends human rights and national interests of Ukraine. Her articles and interviews are always characterized by courage and integrity, which makes her a voice of conscience for millions of Ukrainians.

"Oksana Stefanivna not only creates art but also actively influences the formation of social values, promotes the development of democratic principles and national consciousness. That is why I thank my colleagues for supporting our initiative and sincerely congratulate Oksana Stefanivna on this honorary title!" Maryna Poroshenko added.

It is worth noting that Oksana Zabuzhko is a winner of numerous national and international awards, a Fulbright scholar, a lecturer in Ukrainian studies at Harvard and Pittsburgh universities, and a promoter of Ukraine in the international arena. Her works are adapted for the stage by numerous theaters in Ukraine, Europe, and North America.

Zabuzhko's novel Field Studies in Ukrainian Sex, published in 1996, became the first bestseller in independent Ukraine, launching the development of the Ukrainian book market. This novel is also the most widely translated Ukrainian prose work in the world.

As a reminder, Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko has compiled a list of the best Ukrainian novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that she would recommend Ukrainians to read.
