Zaluzhny's assistant killed in explosion in his own home near Kyiv: what is known

In the village of Chaiky, Kyiv region, a serviceman, Hennadiy Chastiakov, who worked as an assistant to the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhny, was killed. The police say that he was careless with ammunition.

The incident was reported by the National Police of Ukraine on the evening of November 6. OBOZ.UA's sources confirmed that, according to preliminary information, the deceased was Gennadiy Chastyakov.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report of an explosion. Law enforcement officials report that the 39-year-old soldier was killed by a grenade.

His 13-year-old son was seriously injured in the explosion. The child is now under medical supervision.

"The police are working at the scene. Criminal proceedings have been initiated over the death of a person and illegal handling of ammunition," the Kyiv regional police said.

Later, Valeriy Zaluzhny himself confirmed the death of his assistant. He wrote on his Telegram channel that Major Gennadiy Chastiakov died on his birthday. According to Zaluzhny, an unknown explosive device detonated in one of the gifts.

Gennadiy is survived by his wife and four children. The man celebrated his birthday with his family.

"It is an indescribable pain and a heavy loss for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and for me personally. My deepest condolences to the family... Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Hennadiy has been a reliable shoulder for me, devoting his life to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the fight against Russian aggression," the Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief wrote.

He assured that the causes and circumstances of the explosion and Chastiakov's death would be established during the pre-trial investigation.

The media showed the first photo from the scene of the death of Zaluzhny's aide. They write that, according to the wife of the deceased soldier, he brought a gift package containing a bottle of alcohol and glasses in the form of grenades. When the package was opened, there was an explosion.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances of the tragic deaths of soldiers of the 128th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and civilians as a result of a Russian missile attack on a settlement in Zaporizhzhia region. An internal investigation has been initiated to determine the causes of the tragedy.
