What New Year's dishes Soviet people considered real delicacies
The New Year's holiday was considered one of the most important holidays in the Soviet Union. Therefore, everyone paid special attention to its preparation. And since many products were scarce in those days, they had to be not only bought, but practically fought for by standing in long lines.
Soviet families had almost identical dishes on their tables that most people still remember with warm nostalgia. FoodOboz will tell you about them.
Crab salad
This dish was considered a real delicacy, and only successful families prepared one. If the hostess managed to buy canned crab meat in the summer, it was saved for the New Year's celebration. Each family had its own special recipe for this dish.
Champagne
In order to get a bottle of champagne on the festive table, you had to stand in line for hours or get it through a friend. It was customary to take the first sip of champagne while the chimes were ringing.
Appetizers
Cheese and meat slices were the appetizers that were obligatory on New Year's tables at that time. The food was cut into thin slices, arranged on plates beautifully, and garnished with dill.
Hot dishes
The most popular main course was chicken. However, some families sometimes even cooked veal or goose. Interestingly, in certain regions of the USSR, dumplings were a traditional main dish on the New Year's table.
Desserts
Since the selection of sweets in stores was quite small, housewives had to prepare desserts on their own. The most popular of them were Napoleon and Honey cakes, Potato mini cake, as well as jelly.
Tangerines
This is a real symbol of the New Year. In the USSR, tangerines could only be bought in December. It was then that the country received supplies of this "overseas" fruit. That is why they were and are associated with the New Year holidays.
