Ukraine's best tennis player creates drama at the 2024 Olympics and reaches the quarterfinals
Ukraine's top-ranked player Marta Kostiuk (WTA #19) has reached the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament in Paris. In the match of the 1/8 finals, the 22-year-old from Kyiv was stronger than Maria Sakkari (WTA #8) from Greece – 4:6, 7:6 (5:7), 6:4.
Our compatriot started the match confidently, took a 3-0 lead, but then lost the entire advantage. The Greek won 5 games in a row with powerful serves. Only when losing 3:5 did Kostiuk manage to break, which didn't really matter.
The real drama unfolded in the second game. Both tennis players took turns serving, bringing the game to a tiebreak. There, the Ukrainian's nerves proved to be stronger (7:5).
In the third set, Marta managed to impose her game on her opponent from the first minutes and did not let her go until the victory. After the final game, the Ukrainian tennis player fell to the court.
Marta will play Donna Vekic (WTA No. 21) from Croatia in the 1/4 finals.
Kostiuk, who is making her career debut at the Olympics, defeated New Zealand's Lulu Sun (6-4, 6-3) at the start of the 2024 Games. In the second round, the Ukrainian was stronger than the Frenchwoman Clara Burel 7:6, 6:2.
