Ukraine wins third medal of the 2024 Olympics in athletics. Video
Ukrainian athlete Mykhailo Kokhan won a bronze medal in the hammer throw at the 2024 Olympics. The 22-year-old from Dnipro finished with a mark of 79.39 meters.
Kohan achieved his best result in his second attempt. Almost immediately, Mykhailo dropped to second place after Canada's Ethan Katzberg threw a phenomenal 84.12.
Commenting on his success, Mykhailo admitted that in the three years since the last Olympics he had gained experience and began to throw consistently this year in the 80-meter competition.
"But today, as you can see, the results are less than in Tokyo, but the place is higher. So I am very pleased that I managed to win a bronze medal for Ukraine with this result. I'm in good shape now, I'm very strong and very fast, but today, unfortunately, I couldn't fully realize my potential. The problem was that it was a slightly different lap or the Olympic Games were just in the name," said our athlete.
Mykhailo also reacted to the fact that he had been running second for a long time.
"I never get my hopes up in advance, because everything can change in the last attempt, for example, in Tokyo I fell from second to fourth place. And somewhere else I was slipping from high to low. But today all the stars aligned and I managed to keep the medal," the Ukrainian added.
Kohan admitted that in his last attempts he wanted to improve his result.
"Because there was only 60 cm between the third and second place, and these are not my numbers at all. I could have easily taken the silver, but I am grateful to God for this award," the bronze medalist of the 2024 Games could not hide his emotions.
Mykhailo does not hide the fact that he had to sleep on the balcony before qualifying.
"Today the weather was generally good at night, 16-17 degrees, and I slept very well. I was cheerful and generally felt very good, but my vision was a little bit off," the athlete summarized.
