Famous American boxer Michael Hunter (22-1-2, 16 KOs) recalled previously unknown details of his fight against Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs). In April 2017, our compatriot defeated Hunter on points, defending the World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight championship belt.

Hunter admits that he made several mistakes in preparation for the fight, which ultimately cost him the defeat.

"If you look at the record of this fight, you will see that on the night of the fight I was underweight than at the weigh-in, and Usyk had 4-5 kg of extra power. I did not restore my water balance. I was completely dehydrated. If a fighter has an empty stomach and then you give him a lot of water, that's the worst thing you can do for him. Young fighters never do that. Because it dries you out. Because after that, you really have nothing inside you," Boxingscene quoted Hunter as saying.

Hunter noted that times were harder for him back then, and part of his motivation was related to the financial issue.

"I had my first child, and everything was about finances. I had about $3,000 for the camp. I couldn't eat. I sometimes ate once a day. That's why I couldn't prepare the way I wanted to," the boxer admitted.

Even then, Hunter said he knew the fight would be grueling given his current form.

"Before the fight, I knew it was going to be a long night, especially in the first and second rounds. When I was going back to the corner, I thought about it and said: "Listen, I have a decision: I need to stop the fight early," the American recalled.
