The Telegraph names new top club option for Ukrainian defender Oleksandr Zinchenko
Arsenal's Ukrainian defender Oleksandr Zinchenko is expected to leave the London club and join Borussia Dortmund, the Telegraph reports. The 28-year-old Ukrainian national team captain, who left Manchester City for £30 million in 2022, may change teams before the January transfer window closes.
Borussia are actively looking for a new left-back and have put Zinchenko at the top of their list after failing to agree with Chelsea on the transfer of Renato Veiga.
"Chelsea have agreed to allow Veiga to move to Juventus on loan for the rest of the season, despite initially insisting he could only leave permanently. Dortmund had made an offer for Veiga and have now been forced to look elsewhere. Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell is thought to be another player the Germans have considered, but Zinchecko is currently rated as their top target," the publication writes.
Despite starting for Arsenal in Wednesday's Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb, Zinchenko lost his place in the Mikel Arteta hierarchy to young Miles Lewis-Skelly.
However, Lewis-Skelly's injury in the match against Aston Villa may force Arsenal to wait for the results of a medical examination before releasing Zinchenko. At the same time, Riccardo Calafiori, who was on the Dortmund bench, has recovered from his injury, making the sale of Zinchenko even more likely.
Since joining Arsenal, Zinchenko has made 81 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 2 goals and providing 4 assists.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund fired head coach Nuri Şahin this week and could reportedly appoint former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag in his place.
It should be noted that earlier the media reported that the Italian champion Inter Milan is preparing to send an offer for Zinchenko to join their team. The head coach Simone Inzaghi is interested in signing the Ukrainian, emphasizing his versatility and ability to play both in defense and in the center of the field.
This season, the Ukrainian took part in 11 matches, playing a total of 331 minutes. Our compatriot has not played a single full match. Moreover, in the Premier League, Zinchenko spent only one minute on the pitch over the past month.
