On the night of May 19, Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) defeated British boxer Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) to become the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the four-belt era. Our compatriot won by a split decision – 115:112, 113:114, 114:113.
The 37-year-old Crimean appeared in the ring wearing a Cossack outfit and the inscription "FC Polissya" on his back. Usyk sang the national anthem with enthusiasm and then rushed into the fight.
Oleksandr was on the offensive in the opening rounds, but by the middle of the fight, Fury seized the initiative. The sixth three-minute period was especially difficult for the Ukrainian when the Briton launched his most powerful attack. Usyk could barely stand on his feet. At the same time, the boxer from Manchester regularly put on a show, lowering his arms and calling his opponent to the corner.
In the ninth round, the Ukrainian began to chase his opponent and almost knocked Tyson out in the end. According to experts and fans, he was saved by the referee, who intervened and recorded a standing knockdown. As a result, it was this moment that became decisive and allowed Oleksandr to win a historic victory.
After the fight, Usyk was late for the press conference. He was rushed to the hospital.
