The famous Ukrainian tennis player withdrew from the 2024 Olympics. The reason has been announced
Ukraine's fourth-ranked player Angelina Kalinina will not play at the Olympic Games in Paris. The 27-year-old native of Nova Kakhovka was supposed to start in the round of 32 with a match against Arancha Roos (Netherlands). The Ukrainian will be replaced by Olivia Gadeka from Australia.
The weather was bad in Paris for the last two days. It has been raining. The match on July 27 was postponed several times, and Kalinina had to periodically warm up in the cold. Because of this, she fell ill and had to withdraw from the competition.
"This morning I felt a sore throat. Of course, I was very upset, because it was a big dream and honor for me to play at the Olympics and represent my country, especially in such a difficult time. But we still decided not to take any risks to avoid complications. Thank you all for your support and I wish victories to all Ukrainian athletes!" Angelina said in an interview with the IOC.
12 hours ago, Angelina posted a video of her training in the French capital on Instagram.
Kalinina has won 19 ITF tournaments (16 of them in singles). She has won one junior Grand Slam tournament in doubles (Australian Open 2014).
In the period from 2022 to 2023, she held the title of Ukraine's first racket, which since 2012 belonged to Elina Svitolina, who at that time went on maternity leave.
