The 63-year-old Oscar-winning actor and director Sean Penn has praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky all over the world. The star appeared on an ABC talk show to talk about his movie Superpower, about the Ukrainian leader and the indomitable people of a free country. In a conversation with the program's host, world-famous comedian Jimmy Kimmel, the director said that he initially planned to make a light documentary about a comedian who became president. "It was before we knew about the Russian group's build-up. We knew that Ukraine has been fighting a war, a defensive war in the east since 2014," the actor explained.
Having witnessed the struggle of Ukrainians against the Russian occupiers, no one remembered the frivolous movie anymore. The entire film crew ignored the US State Department's warning to get out of Ukraine and decided to continue their work in the war-torn country.
Sean Penn was surprised that Volodymyr Zelensky did not cancel their meetings but found time to shoot the movie. The interview was recorded in a bomb shelter.
"Any head of state, any politician, any head of a large company has a moment when you start to feel the script. There is not a single moment with him that is not sincere," the director said.
According to Sean Penn, the President of Ukraine saw the rough cut of the movie. Speaking about the leader's reaction to his work, the director said that Volodymyr Zelenskyy stood up and said: "I bet you're glad I watched it."
