"Rematch with Dubois is a good fight, but..." A new rival has been found for Usyk
Famous American promoter Tom Loeffler suggested Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) as a possible opponent for unified world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs). Loeffler, 58, believes that the Ukrainian's second fight with Daniel Dubois will not attract any audience.
"A rematch with Daniel Dubois is a good fight. But I would always like to see a fight with Deontay Wilder," Loeffler said in an exclusive interview with World Boxing News.
According to media reports, Wilder will return to the ring in April. Loeffler noted that if he makes a successful return, the American will be an attractive opponent for Usyk. Loeffler has known Oleksandr for many years through his work with K2 Promotions, the Ukrainian division he helped create with Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.
"Deontay is always involved in spectacular fights - whether he knocks out his opponent or gets knocked out himself," added Loeffler.
During his career, Usyk took part in some of the most significant fights of our time, winning gold at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in 2011 and the Olympic Games in 2012.
In his professional career, he achieved even more: he won the World Boxing Super Series and unified all the major titles in the first heavyweight division, defeating such rivals as Marco Hook, Mairis Briedis, and Murat Gassiev. Moving up to super-heavyweight, he defeated Anthony Joshua twice, scored two victories over Tyson Fury, and knocked out Daniel Dubois.
Loeffler believes that all this confirms Usyk's status as the best boxer in the world at the moment.
"Sasha has done everything to prove that he is number one in the pound-for-pound rankings. This is the true essence of such a ranking when he defeats boxers who are 13-18 kg heavier than him and dominates the division, beating them in their prime, as he did with Joshua, Tyson Fury, and the third champion, Daniel Dubois, whom he defeated in Poland. There are many great boxers, but everything he has achieved so far allows me to put him at the top of the list," the American promoter summarized.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on June 2, Wilder suffered a crushing defeat against Zhilei Zhang (27-2-1, 22 KOs) from China. The fight at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) ended early.
