Not Dubois and not Joshua. Hearn named "only one option" for whom Usyk should fight
The head of the Matchroom Boxing promotional company, Eddie Hearn, has proposed to match the WBA, WBO, WBC and IBO world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) with Australian Jay Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs), who is considered the best in the cruiserweight division. According to the promoter, this fight is the only option for the Ukrainian champion, as there are almost no other interesting opponents left for him.
Hearn doubts that Daniel Dubois, who lost to Usyk in the summer of 2023, will be able to organize a competitive rematch. Instead, he believes that a meeting with Opetaia could be a real test thanks to an interesting style confrontation.
"Usyk is a phenomenal fighter, one of the greatest in history. But what should he do next? In my opinion, a fight with Jay Opetaia is the only option," Hearn said in an interview with IFL TV.
Nevertheless, according to Hearn, Jay must first earn this fight by defending his title against David Nieka and possibly unifying with Gilberto Ramirez.
On the night of Sunday, December 22, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury for the second time and defended his titles. The seventh fight of the Ukrainian in the super-heavyweight division ended with a victory on points 116:112, 116:112, 116:112.
When the Ukrainian was announced the winner, Fury's wife's reaction was caught on camera. In addition, the fight was featured in a famous cartoon. And in Russia, they started spreading fake words about Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian was suspended from boxing.
A few days later, the video of the fight was blocked following a complaint from the European Football Union (UEFA), which claimed that it violated copyright law.
