Losses of $120 million: an illegal scheme with the Usyk – Fury fight is revealed
The fight between Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) and Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) caused huge losses to the rights holders of the boxing night. The May 18 fight became one of the largest events in terms of the number of illegal broadcasts and streaming streams.
According to the Daily Mail, citing a study, the number of viewers of the fight in Riyadh who did not watch it on legal platforms exceeds 20 million people. 45 percent of illegal streaming was in Europe, 25 percent in North America, 18 percent in the UK, and 16 percent in Asia.
It cost broadcasters more than $120 million in losses. Many of the illegal streams were funded by gambling ads or cryptocurrency schemes, and some charge minimal fees.
Usyk defeated Fury by a split decision – 115:112, 113:114, 114:113. Tyson also expressed his desire to visit Ukraine.
Referee Mark Nelson's decision to score Tyson a knockdown has drawn criticism from experts. At the same time, it became known about a little-known rule used by the referee.
Following the fight, the Ukrainian was suspended from boxing for medical reasons. He was hospitalized after the fight. Promoter Oleksandr Krasiuk spoke about the details of the Ukrainian's jaw injury.
Later it became known that Usyk could have been arrested in Saudi Arabia after the fight. And the knockdown in the fight was found in an eighteenth-century painting.
Fury has already decided on the rematch. However, the title of absolute world champion will not be at stake, as Usyk will be stripped of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt by June 1. This decision angered the British Tony Bellew. Filip Hrgovic (17-0, 14 KOs) and Daniel Dubois (20-2, 19 KOs) will fight for the title.
