Lennox Lewis says Usyk would have little chance in a potential fight against Mike Tyson
Legendary heavyweight boxer Lennox Lewis believes that WBC, WBA, WBO, IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has little chance in a potential 80s-level fight against Mike Tyson. As a man who fought Tyson himself in 2002, Lewis has a unique understanding of what it means to step into the ring with such a cult figure.
"I have tremendous respect for Usyk’s abilities. He’s proven he can outbox the best heavyweights of today. But a prime Tyson? That’s a different level," Lennox said.
Lewis noted that while Usyk's mobility and footwork could help him against bigger and less mobile heavyweights, it would be a tremendous task to deal with Tyson's speed, explosive power and relentless pressure.
"Tyson was a force of nature in his prime. You can’t just outbox him, you had to survive his onslaught, and not many did," Lennox said in an interview with dailynewsreel.com.ng.
However, Lewis did not write Usyk off completely, recognizing his incredible resilience and ability to stick to a strategy.
"If anyone could frustrate Tyson and avoid the big shots, it might be Usyk. But it wouldn’t be easy," the Briton summarized.
The authors of the interview argue that Tyson's ability to close the distance and apply pressure with incredible power, like a steam engine, would most likely have pushed Usyk to his limits. Mike was a master of close-range attacks, and his explosive combinations could cause huge damage to even the most agile fighter. It would be very difficult to keep him at bay.
"While fans may never get a definitive answer to this fantasy matchup, it’s clear that both Usyk and Tyson are legends in their own right. As Lewis’s comments have reignited the debate, boxing aficionados around the world are left to imagine the electrifying clash that could have been," the article says.
