"Because he is Ukrainian?" Russian Olympic champion outraged by Usyk's first place in the honorary ranking
Olympic champion Egor Mekhontsev criticized the editors of the Boxing Scene portal for calling Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) the best heavyweight of the 21st century. The Russian ex-boxer repeated the traditional Kremlin narratives about the politicization of sports and disagreed with the journalists' choice.
Mekhontsev said this in an interview with Vprognoze.ru. According to the 40-year-old Russian, the ranking was compiled by "a bunch of people who consider themselves experts," and therefore fans should not trust their opinion and take their list seriously.
"This is the opinion of only one editorial board, a small handful of people who consider themselves experts. I would have made a different list. Perhaps this is a politicized decision. I don't know what criteria they took into account to make this rating. They have the right to do so on their portal. There are sports criteria, creative criteria, and artistic criteria. Maybe he deserved to be in first place for his artistry, or because he is Ukrainian. Why deny them? Time puts everything in its place," Mekhontsev said.
It should be noted that along with Usyk, the legendary Klitschko brothers are among the top 3 best heavyweights of this century. As expected, there were no Russians in the ranking.
Earlier, RosMedia ridiculously accused Usyk of "siding with terrorists." After the rematch with Fury, our compatriot reminded the Russians of the will of the Ukrainian people by raising the saber of Hetman Ivan Mazepa above his head. The details of this performance were later revealed.
