At the 2024 Olympics, the transgender boxer defeated the boxer with the first punch. Video
Italian boxer Angela Carini lost her fight with Algeria's Imane Khelif in 46 seconds in the 1/8 finals of the 2024 Olympics. The 25-year-old Carini missed the first punch to the head and refused to continue the fight.
Khelif, 25, is not transgender in the full sense of the word. She was also born a girl, but she has been diagnosed with a disorder of sexual development (DSD), which causes some women to have XY chromosomes and blood testosterone levels typical of men.
In 2023, Khelif was disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after winning the 2023 World Championships. Her doping sample showed elevated testosterone levels, and the organizers said she was unable to pass a gender reassignment test.
"I am grief-stricken. I entered the ring to honor my father's memory. I've been told many times that I'm a warrior, but I wanted to stop for my health. I have never experienced such pain after a punch to the nose before," said the Italian athlete.
When asked whether it would have been better to give up the fight up front, Karini replied: "I'm not the type to give up easily. No, even if they had said we wouldn't fight, I would never have accepted it. I have a warrior mentality. This time I couldn't cope. I felt too much pain in my nose. I said, "Enough. That's enough."
