On the eve of the anniversary of the liberation of Kyiv region from Russian occupation forces, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a statement. He stressed that the de-occupation of this region has become a symbol of Ukraine's ability to win this war.
The head of state wrote about this on his Telegram channel. He also posted a video showing how bravely Ukrainians fought against the invaders.
"Events that were unimaginable in the 21st century became a reality in Kyiv's satellite cities of Bucha and Irpin. Russian troops marched on the Ukrainian capital from the north and brought death and destruction. For many residents of the Kyiv region, last year was the worst year of their lives. The Kyiv region has become a symbol that Ukraine will be able to win this war," Zelenskyy said.
It should be noted that it was in Irpin that the Russian offensive on the capital was stopped. Along with professional soldiers, many volunteers fought against the "second army of the world", who were ordinary civilians until February 24, 2022. The occupiers never managed to completely capture Irpin. Now this city has become a symbol of Ukrainian heroism and resilience forever.
At the same time, Bucha will forever remain a painful reminder of the genocide of the Ukrainian people committed by Russia.
In total, 1137 civilians died as a result of the occupiers' criminal actions in the Kyiv region, including 461 in Bucha alone. These are mostly ordinary civilians.
