Scandals and movie bloopers in "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer"

The confrontation between the two main blockbusters premiered on the same day continues. However, both Barbie and Oppenheimer managed to get haters despite the multimillion-dollar box office receipts in the first weekend. Moviegoers around the world find bloopers and historical inaccuracies in the movies. Some of them became the cause of high-profile international scandals.

Thus, "Barbie" has already been banned in Vietnam, while India appealed to the director of "Oppenheimer" Christopher Nolan with a request to cut one of the scenes. OBOZREVATEL will tell you more.

"Barbie" provoked a scandal in international politics

In one of the episodes we can see Margot Robbie against the background of the world map, where in the area of Asia there is a dotted line. The Vietnamese authorities saw in it the so-called nine-dash line, which is considered to be China's territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Warner Brothers, of course, immediately began to deny any playing along with China and references to the dispute between the countries in general. Nevertheless, the episode with the map was perceived extremely offensive in Vietnam that lead to the movie ban.

Some countries "dressed" a naked Florence Pugh in "Oppenheimer"

India, Indonesia and Bangladesh did not appreciate the sex scene with Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy or rather the fragment where the actress sits completely naked in a chair. This episode was censored in the countries listed above. No, it was not cut, but the heroine appeared in a "black CGI-dress". Graphics was imposed quite accurately, so movie fans even assumed that the editing of the scene was made intentionally. The studio has not commented on the incident.

India asked to cut sex scene from 'Oppenheimer' due to desecration of scripture

During the intimate scene between Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh's characters, one of the holy scriptures in Hinduism, the Bhagavad Gita, is shown in the frame. Moreover, Robert Oppenheimer quotes the book in the same scene, describing the creation of nuclear weapons with the words "I became death, the destroyer of worlds."

This was pointed out by the founder of the Save Culture Save India Foundation, criticizing Christopher Nolan and calling for this episode to be cut from the film: "We don't know the motivation and logic behind the inclusion of this unnecessary scene from the scientist's life. But it is a direct attack on the religious beliefs of a billion Hindus, which amounts to waging war on the Hindu community."

The "wrong" U.S. flag in "Oppenheimer"

Christopher Nolan is considered a modern day genius, as all his movies are complex convoluted stories with unpredictable denouement. To create such masterpieces, you need to be extremely attentive to detail. It is this quality that the director is famous for. Nevertheless, he made a rather gross historical mistake in "Oppenheimer".

A movie blooper was found by network users. They paid attention to the scene where the residents of Los Alamos enthusiastically waving American flags, depicting 50 stars and symbolizing, as we know, the states of America. What seems to be the mistake? Well, events shown in this scene unfold in 1945, but Alaska and Hawaii received the status of a state ony in 1959. Thus, there were only 48 states then and the U.S. flag could not have that appearance.

"Oppenheimer" was subtitled with "Barbie" lines

Another funny incident happened neither by the fault of the directors nor anyone else. Indian audience is unlucky again. "Oppenheimer" was shown with "Barbie" subtitles in one of the Chhattisgarh's movie theaters. That's how internet users created hundreds of memes about the so-called "Barbieheimer", but some viewers saw it in real life. Commentators speculate that at the time of Barbie premier, the audience was reading subtitles from a thriller about the "father of the atomic bomb".

To remind, the premieres of the two major movie hits of summer-2023 "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" were held on the same day, July 20. This fact divided the audience into two clans: some went to watch a moralizing comedy about the iconic blonde doll, while others preferred biographical thriller about the creator of the atomic bomb. However, especially brave moviegoers weree the ones who decided to visit two sessions in one day. This confrontation or cultural phenomenon even received the special term "Barbieheimer". However, it was the same "pink" movie from Greta Gerwig who won the fight. For the first weekend at the box office "Barbie" collected 300 million dollars.

We also told you that movie critics and viewers are actively sharing their reviews of the sensational movie "Barbie". Some call it a beautiful story without deep meaning, and others, on the contrary, are delighted with the coverage of important topics through the prism of humor combined with an interesting non-banal plot.
