She was studying to be a construction worker, but dreamed of becoming a flight attendant. Olena Zelenska talks about her path to becoming the President's wife

Olena Zelenska says she never dreamed of becoming the president's wife

The First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska admitted that as a child she dreamed of flying airplanes and working as a flight attendant. She romanticized this profession, but over time, she failed to realize her goal, so the future screenwriter had to go to study at Kryvyi Rih National University to become an architect.

In a special interview with World Inside Out during a visit to the orphanage, the first lady admitted that she had never thought she would have to be the president's wife, have responsibilities, and radically change her goals and plans for life.

"At school, we were often asked to write an essay on 'Who do you want to be in the future'. I wrote an essay saying that I wanted to be a flight attendant. I thought it was such a romantic profession, they have uniforms and they walk in airplanes so beautifully. I studied at the university, and it was urban construction and economy. I was supposed to be a construction worker, and then I worked in television. I was a writer of humorous programs, and then I was also an editor. And then my husband became president and I had a completely different job. I never dreamed of being a president's wife. But it seems to me that few people dream of this," Olena Zelenska said about the path to becoming the final "profession" of the first lady.

When Dmytro Komarov asked the very young girls of the orphanage about their dream of being the president's wife, almost all of them raised their hands in affirmation. However, children at this age romanticize this status, ignoring the possible difficulties, as he later noted.

"Nobody tells you about it. There is a security service that is responsible for your life because you became the president's wife, not just because you are so precious and therefore need to be protected. The president is the guarantor of the Constitution, the president is the head of our state. Our lives depend on his decisions, and he can be influenced through his family. He can be forced to do something. That's why there is a state policy that the president's family is also under protection," Zelenska explained the thing she doesn't like about the first lady's job.

In particular, she recalled the changes in her life that she experienced as the president's wife in 2019.

"(My life - Ed.) has changed radically. Everything has changed. The president has his responsibilities, and as his wife, I have to help him. I think I support him (my husband - Ed.), but we don't see each other very often now because he lives at work. We can meet once a week. Today I went to visit you [the children], and he went to Kupiansk. We travel in different directions all the time. We very rarely cross paths in Kyiv, but that's the way we work," Zelenska said.
