Scandal at the 2024 Olympics: DJ threatened with death for parodying the Last Supper during the opening ceremony
French DJ and activist Barbara Butch said she filed several police reports after receiving death threats for her participation in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics. One of the scenes reminded viewers of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper.
The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed to Variety that a complaint of cyber harassment had been received and an official investigation had been launched. "The facts could potentially qualify as violence, aggravated by discrimination, death threats and public incitement to attempted murder or physical harm," the statement said.
The scene, which featured drag queens and other members of the LGBTQ community, drew backlash from the Catholic Church as well as prominent conservative figures. Olympic artistic director Thomas Jolly told French TV channel BFMTV that the segment was not inspired by the Last Supper, but instead was a tribute to Greek mythology.
During the opening ceremony, Butch was center stage, standing behind the DJ booth in a silver headdress and blue dress. Audrey Msellati, the artist's lawyer, said: "She has received death, torture and rape threats and has been the target of numerous anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist and crude insults. Barbara Butch condemns this vile hatred directed against her, what she represents and what she stands for. Today she is filing several complaints against these acts committed by French citizens or foreigners and intends to bring to justice anyone who tries to intimidate her in the future."
The Olympic organizers apologized for any misrepresentation during a press conference after the ceremony, with spokeswoman Ann DeCamp saying that "obviously there was never any intention to disrespect any religious group... If people felt offended, we are very sorry."
