"I have never said this": Ada Rohovtseva addresses Ukrainians with an important statement about her past in Russia
Ukrainian theater and film actress Ada Rohovtseva made a frank statement about her work in Russia and her attitude to national identity. She emphasized that she has always remained a Ukrainian artist, despite her frequent travels and performances abroad.
In her statement, Rohovtseva noted that she had never had to justify her professional activities in Russia, as she had never betrayed her country or her people. She said this in an interview with Serhii Zhadan.
"I never felt that I was betraying. I have never said that, so I want to say to all Ukrainians, to all viewers who have any interest in me or pay any attention to me, thank you. Because I have not heard these accusations that "she worked in Russia." I worked in Russia, but I am a Ukrainian artist. I'm here, I've never, ever broken away from my people. And I have never, ever betrayed them either by word or thought," the actress addressed the Ukrainians.
Ada Rohovtseva also spoke about her personal experience with Russians, who constantly demonstrated a superior attitude towards Ukrainians. However, they did not care about nationality if a person had high creative abilities.
"I would come [to Russia – Ed.], and a driver would meet me, and every time he would say to me: "How is your Independent?" I said: "You bastard!" We've been to such courts with him... There is still such arrogance. And I was writing at Mykola Burliayev's, Russian actors were sitting there, I was among them, and I was given the word, and he represented me in front of me. He said: "Our Russian artist." I said: "Stop, stop, stop, stop the recording. I'm not yours or a Russian actress, I came from Ukraine. Let's respect each other somehow. And she stopped the recording," Ada Rohovtseva recalled.
In her opinion, Russians do not want to recognize the existence of other nations, languages, and cultures.
"They don't want to admit that there are other people with other preferences, with other histories, with other habits, with another language. They don't want to admit that there are other people. They think that everyone is Russian," she said.
Rogovtseva also mentioned that she is currently banned from entering Russia and could be imprisoned if she returns.
"If I were to go to Russia now, I would face a three-year prison sentence. They even argued whether I was a St. Petersburg or Moscow artist. But I have never in my life been away from my land, from my graves, from my blood people. I only went there as if it were my job," the actress explained.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote that Ada Rohovtseva reacted to the harassment scandal at her native Karpenko-Karyi University. The 87-year-old celebrity, who once received her higher education at this educational institution, supported all students and noted that the university has long been in need of radical changes.
