Charles III has chickens, and George V's parrot ate with him at the same table: what pets did the Windsors have

What pets did the Windsors have?

British family members rarely talk about or show their pets. But despite this, the pictures that have been leaked online show how much the Windsor dynasty loves animals. Almost everyone has their own four-legged (or two-legged) friend. For example, King Charles III has chickens, and his wife Camilla has been taking care of two Jack Russell Terriers, the British "Patron Dogs," since 2011.

The Windsors have also owned horses, many different breeds of dogs, and a parrot. Interestingly, there is no mention of cats. OBOZ.UA has collected some of the most interesting and prominent pets of the royal family.

Charles III and his chickens

In August, the British monarch Charles III took 31 chickens from a charity organization. The Daily Mail writes that one of them was even named Henrietta. Now the animals live in Highgrove Gardens, the King and Queen's country house in Gloucestershire.

George V dined with his parrot at the same table

Charlotte, an African gray parrot, became a member of the royal family during the reign of George V, the grandfather of Elizabeth II. The king acquired the winged friend in one of the eastern ports when he served in the Royal Navy.

The bird was quite talkative, and this periodically annoyed the monarch's wife Maria of Teck, who also opposed the bird having dinner with the family at the same table. The source says that Elizabeth II used to feed Charlotte sugar cubes when she was little.

Elizabeth II's favorite corgis

For most of her long life, Queen Elizabeth took care of corgis. This particular breed of dog was her favorite. She first met this dog at the age of 7, when her father bought a Welsh Corgi named Dookie for the then-princess and her younger sister Princess Margaret.

During her life, Elizabeth II had more than 30 dogs. Photos with them were often taken during various royal tours. It is known that the animals had a luxurious diet of sirloin steak and chicken breast. All meals were prepared for them by a chef.

Interestingly, this breed of dog is considered English for a reason, as it was bred in Wales, a large region of England where the Queen's family comes from.

Wedding gift for Kate Middleton and Prince William

In 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton were presented with an English Cocker Spaniel dog for their wedding. The young couple named him Lupo.

It was this dog that was featured in the photo of William and Kate holding the newborn George. Since then, Lupo has met all the new members of the Welsh family: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The four-legged friend died in 2020 after living with the royal family for about nine years. However, in 2021, the couple got another dog, which they received from Kate Middleton's brother.

Zara Tyndall's favorite horses

Zara Tyndall, the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, is perhaps the most horse-loving member of the Windsor family. Thanks to her passion for equestrian sports, she won a silver medal in the three-day eventing competition at the 2012 London Olympics.

Tyndall is known to take care of four horses.
