Alec Baldwin sued prosecutors in the case of the murder of Halyna Hutchins: the reason is given
American actor Alec Baldwin has filed a lawsuit against prosecutors in the case of the murder of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film "Rust" in 2021. He complained of malicious prosecution.
The celebrity accused Special Prosecutor Kari Morrisey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, and the county sheriff's office of abuse of process, defamation, intentional misrepresentation of evidence, and violation of the New Mexico Civil Rights Act. For this, Baldwin demanded damages in an amount to be determined by the court, as well as his attorneys' fees, reports Reople magazine.
According to the actor, the defendants were blinded by a desire to convict him "at any cost" because of the tragic death of a Ukrainian woman on the set. Baldwin believes that they were trying to make him a scapegoat.
He also accused Morrissey of "contradictory" testimony regarding evidence that she allegedly concealed. Regarding Carmack-Altwis, he claimed that she defamed him in an interview with CNN in 2023 when she said that Baldwin had a duty to make sure that security measures were followed.
"Criminal investigations should be about finding truth and justice, not about personal or political gain or prosecuting the innocent," said his attorneys Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas. "Kari Morrissey and the other defendants violated this basic principle and disregarded Alec Baldwin's rights. We are filing this lawsuit to hold the defendants accountable for their misconduct and to prevent them from doing the same to anyone else."
As a reminder, Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins was shot dead on the set of "Rust" on October 21, 2021. It happened while Baldwin was preparing for a scene where the hero was supposed to pull the trigger, pointing his revolver at the camera. The weapon was loaded with a live round. As a result, Hutchins died, suffering a perforating wound to the chest.
During the trial in April 2023, the actor was acquitted of manslaughter charges. The investigation was later reopened on the grounds of reckless use of a firearm and disregard for the safety of others.
Gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was punished on charges that she did not do her job properly. This woman was responsible for the gun that was given to the actor. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
In 2024, Baldwin was finally cleared of all charges. According to the court's decision, prosecutors did not hand over important evidence during the trial.
