Alec Baldwin faces new charges in the murder of Ukrainian woman Hutchins: what the revolver's examination showed

Famous Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin is to be prosecuted again for the murder of Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins during the filming of the scandalous movie Rust in 2021. In April 2023, the actor was found not guilty, but after the examination of the revolver he fired, the investigation resumed on the grounds of negligent use of firearms and disrespect for the safety of others. Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison.

At the time of the murder, 65-year-old Baldwin was practicing shooting a 45 Colt pistol before filming a scene for a western movie, the BBC reports. It turned out that the revolver was loaded, and the actor himself claimed that he did not pull the trigger, but simply took the weapon aside. By his actions, he killed 42-year-old cameraman Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Seuss, who was standing behind him.

The weapon used in the shooting was broken during FBI testing, so the special prosecutor's office in New Mexico commissioned forensic experts to reconstruct the revolver.

"Although Alec Baldwin has repeatedly denied pulling the trigger, given the tests, findings, and observations reported herein, the trigger should have been pulled sufficiently to release the fully cocked or retracted trigger of the evidence revolver," the experts' report said.

Therefore, the actor was charged with two theories: improper use of a firearm and total disregard or indifference to the safety of others. Prosecutors indicated that Baldwin could be convicted on only one of these theories, not both. Attorney Gloria Allred, who represents Halyna Hutchins, said she "looks forward to the criminal trial."

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of weapons and ammunition on the set, was also charged in this case and with tampering with evidence. She pleaded not guilty and is due to stand trial in February.

Cameraman Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of Rust on October 21, 2021. Baldwin was preparing for a scene in which he was supposed to point a revolver at the camera and allegedly shoot. The weapon turned out to be loaded. Hutchins died after suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
