A juror in the trial of Alec Baldwin told striking details of the case: the murder had to be "hung" on a celebrity
Martina Marquez, a juror in Alec Baldwin's case of the unintentional murder of Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins, called the trial "ridiculous." The woman admitted that she had doubts whether what happened was really the actor's fault.
Marquez, a 36-year-old New Mexico resident and oncologist, is listed in court documents as Juror No. 1. Martina told People magazine that she was "open to hearing the facts" from the beginning of the trial. However, when the prosecutors and defense presented evidence and demanded comments from witnesses during the first two days of the trial, she became convinced that "the case was mishandled from the beginning."
Baldwin, 66, was holding a prop gun on the set of the 2021 western Rust and suddenly fired the weapon, killing cameraman Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The actor was charged with involuntary manslaughter. The star claimed that he had not pulled the trigger and did not know why the gun had live ammunition.
During the trial, special prosecutor Erlinda Johnson portrayed Alec as a "reckless" person who ignored standard safety protocol, which she said contributed to Hutchins' death. But Marquez was confident that the case would be treated as an "accident." "The charge in the indictment seemed a little harsh," the doctor said.
In one of the videos shown, courtesy of Timoteo Benavidez, a lieutenant with the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, the jury saw gunman Hannah Gutierrez-Reed handing a gun to a police officer. She was convicted in March of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving 18 months in prison.
"It didn't make sense," Marquez continues, "You're not supposed to really touch the evidence and move it from place to place. So it made me question the situation because [the gun] could have been in the hands of many people before the lieutenant actually confiscated it."
Martina says she puts the blame on Gutierrez-Reed: "I felt that she was responsible for what happened." Asked if she thought the prosecutors were going after Baldwin because he was a celebrity, Marquez agreed: "I think that was the case. I feel like they needed to attribute [the death] to someone."
