The US military may launch a multi-level operation against Iranian troops and facilities in Iraq and Syria this weekend (February 3-4). The strikes will be a response to the deaths of three US servicemen and the wounding of about 40 others at a military base in Jordan.

This was stated by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources. At the same time, according to journalists, neither Washington nor Tehran is seeking a direct military confrontation.

The WSJ has information that the US response will be multi-level, with military action and "other steps." It will include not only attacks on "multiple targets" but also measures that will make Iran understand that the United States does not want an escalation.

The goal is to reduce the number of attacks throughout the Middle East while negotiations on a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas continue.

Tehran, for its part, does not recognize responsibility for the drone attack on the US military base in Jordan. Iranian authorities threaten to retaliate if the United States attacks Iranian territory or its personnel.

Earlier, CBS reported that targeted strikes on Iranian targets would be carried out within a few days.

As reported, on January 28, it became known that a UAV strike on the US Tower 22 base in Jordan killed three American servicemen and injured dozens more. This is the first time that U.S. military personnel have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the start of the war in Gaza. Analysts say that the deadly outcome of the incident has increased pressure on US President Joe Biden to respond to the attack. According to US intelligence, the Iranian-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq group was involved in the attack. The White House said the United States would respond "at a time and in a manner of our choosing."
