Trump restricts birthright US citizenship: what it means

Daria DurovaWorld
Trump takes on immigration policy reform

On his first day in office, Donald Trump set about reforming the US immigration system. In particular, he limited the right to birthright citizenship.

Previously, children born in the United States were granted US citizenship by birthright (with the exception of children of diplomatic personnel). According to information obtained by CNN, Trump's executive order prohibits federal agencies from issuing documents in certain cases.

The order is to be applied when parents are in the United States illegally, in situations where the mother is temporarily in the United States, for example, on a visa, the father is not a citizen, etc.

The document relies on the phrase "subject to the jurisdiction of the 14th Amendment" of the Constitution.

Earlier, legal experts told CNN that they were skeptical that this wording would be accepted in court. According to the lawyers, this phrase is more applicable to children of foreign diplomats or situations where a foreign country has invaded and occupied a part of the country.

"Trump's allies and officials are well aware that this move is likely to face legal challenges and eventually reach the Supreme Court," the journalists believe.
