"This is about civic courage." Scholz urged Germans to stand up for Jews in the country

In Germany, following the pro-Palestinian demonstrations over the weekend, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke out against anti-Semitism. He called on Germans to "protect the Jews," calling it "civic courage."

"Anyone who attacks Jews in Germany attacks all of us. That is why we must all work to protect Jews in Germany. It is about moral courage," the politician told the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper. The interview was published on November 6.

The chancellor noted that Berlin does not accept anti-Semitism, and German laws are clear and "crystal clear": burning Israeli flags is a criminal offense.

"Celebrating the death of innocent people is a criminal offense. Shouting anti-Semitic slogans is a criminal offense," Scholz continued.

He said that law enforcement and the courts "know what to do" and must deal with violators. According to the German Chancellor, anti-Semitism must be fought "without any indulgence."

As a reminder, a large, unauthorized pro-Palestinian rally took place in Berlin over the weekend. About a thousand people took to the streets with flags, banners and posters in support of the Gaza Strip. Some participants made anti-Semitic statements.

Police dispersed the crowd, and at least one police officer was injured during the clashes. Some of the offenders were arrested.
