"The war was a huge blow": Ukraine's Permanent Representative warns UN will cease to exist if not reformed
The United Nations may cease to exist if it is not reformed. Intergovernmental negotiations are opened every year, but so far nothing has happened.
This was stated by Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsia, in an interview with Ukrinform. According to him, fundamental reforms are impossible without the consent of the four permanent members of the Security Council - the United States, the United Kingdom, France and China.
However, the diplomat emphasized, this can happen only if the legal personality of Russia, which currently occupies the seat of the Soviet Union in the Security Council, is replaced.
According to Kyslytsia, fundamental reforms take place after major shocks. The Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine was one such blow.
"The act of signing either a peace agreement or taking another way to stop the aggression should be followed by a real international conference on global security. And it is likely that fateful decisions can be made there, including on the reformation of the Security Council," he said.
The Permanent Representative said that June 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter, and October 24, when it entered into force, will mark the 80th anniversary of the Organization's creation.
If the 80th anniversary is not held right, it will give way to "a deep crisis of the UN and further inability of countries to even assess the situation they are facing in the anniversary year." In his opinion, this cannot be a simple solemn meeting, given the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the fact that there are fifty conflicts in the world in general.
As reported, earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the UN and said that it is no longer an effective tool for global governance. According to him, to fix the situation, UN must be reformed.
