The Spanish Army is studying the combat experience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces gained during the war with Russia. It is used in military exercises.

In particular, the Spanish military is practicing, taking into account the Ukrainian experience, the actions of units during assaults on enemy trenches. This was reported by the Defense Express military portal.

According to the portal, the Spanish army has begun an active study of the experience of the Armed Forces on the battlefield. In particular, the Spanish military are practicing the actions of their units during assaults on enemy trenches.

The journalists drew attention to a publication by the Infodefensa portal, which states that the Galicia Brigade, which Spain deployed as part of the NATO contingent in Slovakia, and the Bripac parachute brigade have already conducted relevant training.

"As it directly follows from the above-mentioned publication, to begin with, the Spanish military is trying to rethink the current situation on the front of the Russian-Ukrainian war, where, in their opinion, "the fighting is limited to fluctuations in the line of contact by several kilometers and positional stalemate, with the exception of the Kursk Bulge." Apparently, they were preparing to wage a maneuver war, where there is no clear line of contact and the depth of advance can be several tens of kilometers per day," Defense Express writes.

This rethinking is the basis of the Spanish military's training format. The video that appeared online shows "a mechanical reenactment of the assault and trench clearing actions practiced by the Spanish military," but drones or armored vehicles and any other ground equipment are not used in such exercises.

"From Defense Express, we would like to emphasize the following. At first glance, the training format itself, where the personnel only practice the procedure, without the use of appropriate equipment and light and noise effects, may look too mechanistic and unconvincing. But on the other hand, this is why we are talking about rethinking, because it seems that, to begin with, the Spanish military is trying to accept the idea that instead of maneuvering and expeditionary actions, they, as NATO members, need to prepare for actions in a "positional stalemate" like the one of the First World War," Defense Express explained.

They also recalled that, according to The Military Balance 2024, at the beginning of last year, the Spanish Army numbered 71.9 thousand soldiers, organized into one army corps and two divisions. They were armed with 219 tanks, up to 1,000 different armored vehicles, and 1,500 artillery systems of various types.

Earlier, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen called on the European defense industry to learn from the experience of the Ukrainian defense industry. She is convinced that Europe needs to strengthen its own defense in order to effectively counter current security challenges, and the exchange of experience with Ukraine will help in this regard.
