Serbia will start developing Europe's largest lithium deposit together with Germany and the European Union. Belgrade made a strategic decision in favor of them, not China, as it wants to become part of the EU.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said this in an interview with Handelsblatt. Lithium mining may be the country's entry ticket to the European Union.

Serbia will be able to produce 58 thousand tons of lithium annually. This is enough to produce 1.1 million electric cars.

"We will be able to supply about 17% of the European market. The Chinese have also very clearly expressed their interest in accessing lithium deposits, but we told them that we are discussing this issue with the Europeans and that there are no discussions with China on lithium," the president emphasized.

He added that Serbia wants to preserve added value in its country as much as possible. Belgrade is looking to locate car battery production facilities in Serbia and sell only part of the lithium as raw material.

With this lithium project, Vučić has high hopes for both the development of the Serbian economy and the acceleration of the EU accession process. He emphasized that both the majority of Serbs and the government want to become part of the European Union, and this is their goal.

The Serbian president also denied the country's intentions to get closer to Russia and China and rejected accusations of trying to "sit on two chairs."

"I sit on only one chair, the Serbian one. And in what way are we getting closer to Russia? I have not spoken to Putin for two and a half years," he said.

As reported, Serbia, which is known for its sympathy for the aggressor country Russia, has nevertheless sold Ukraine 800 million euros worth of ammunition since the beginning of the full-scale war. The exports of shells were carried out through third countries.
