Scholz arrives in China amid rising tensions between the countries

On April 14, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in China for a three-day visit to strengthen trade ties between Beijing and Berlin. The politician also intends to resolve differences on a number of issues during his visit.

It is expected that during his Chinese tour, Scholz intends to raise the issue of China's support for the aggressor country Russia. This was reported by Reuters.

Scholz began his visit in the southwestern metropolis of Chongqing. He will also visit Shanghai and Beijing, where he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang. During the visit, Scholz will visit the hydrogen fuel cell plant of the German automotive supplier Bosch in Chongqing.

It is worth noting that the beginning of Scholz's visit coincided with the beginning of Iran's attack on Israel. Therefore, upon his arrival, Scholz condemned the Iranian strikes "in the strongest terms possible." At the same time, German officials said that Beijing could play a positive role in cooling tensions in the Middle East.

Scholz is also expected to address the issue of China's support for Russia. German officials have explicitly stated that Beijing's support and exports to Russia allow Moscow to continue waging an aggressive war against Ukraine and causing "the loss of China's reputation" in Europe and beyond.

As a reminder, Scholz's visit will be the longest foreign trip to a single country by a chancellor since he took office in December 2021. The three-day program includes a meeting with Xi Jinping. The main topics are the economy, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the situation around Taiwan.

Earlier, on April 13, it was reported that Germany announced the immediate delivery of an additional Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. The reason was the intensification of Russian strikes.
