Russia Blocks Malta's Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Chairmanship: Asks for Talks with Lavrov

Lilia RagutskaWorld
For the second time, Russia has blocked the election of the OSCE chairmanship in 2024

After blocking Estonia's  Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe chairmanship in 2024 , Russia prevented an alternative vote in which Malta was to be elected as the chairing state. At the same time, Russia also blocked the election of four top officials of the organization, including the secretary general.

This was reported by Radio Liberty's Brussels correspondent Rickard Jozwiak. According to him, the Russians are demanding that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov be present at the OSCE ministerial meeting in North Macedonia next week to make the final decision.

According to the journalist, Russia has once again resorted to blackmail, taking advantage of the fact that all decisions in the OSCE are made by consensus, and blocked the election of Malta as the organization's presiding state in 2024.

"Russia has already blocked Estonia's OSCE chairmanship in 2024. Now it does not agree to an alternative vote for Malta's chairmanship and four top positions in the organization as a package (including the Secretary General)," Jozwiak wrote.

Currently, the Russian delegation is demanding that the Russian foreign minister be received at the OSCE ministerial meeting that begins on November 30.

"They want Lavrov to be received in North Macedonia next week during the OSCE ministerial meeting to make a final decision," the journalist emphasized.

Earlier, Lavrov complained that he could not attend the meeting of OSCE foreign ministers in Skopje, North Macedonia. He even sent a letter to the government of this country, which currently holds the OSCE chairmanship, demanding that it "ensure his presence in Skopje."

However, North Macedonian Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani emphasized that the country's airspace is closed to Russian aircraft, so "there are several problems with this demand."
