"Putin understands only force": Stubb proposes three-step plan to achieve peace in Ukraine

Anna PavlovaWorld

Russia will not stop in Ukraine if it is not opposed in any peace or ceasefire negotiations. Putin understands only force. Therefore, we must be cruel.

This was stated by Finnish President Alexander Stubb in an interview with Bloomberg. He also proposed a three-step plan to achieve peace, in which Ukraine must first be put in a "strong position."

"This plan includes more support for Ukraine, tougher sanctions against Russia, and the use of frozen assets, and should be combined with a security arrangement where 'Europe supports Ukraine and the United States provides support,'" Stubb said.

The politician added that only these steps should be followed by a ceasefire and then peace talks.

"The only thing Vladimir Putin understands is strength. If you show any weakness, he will essentially come after you," Stubb said.

He highlighted that the danger of any peace agreement regarding Ukraine is whether the peace can be sustained. Stubb reminded that since 2014, the Russian dictator has failed to comply with ceasefire agreements 25 times.

"I don't think anyone can trust Vladimir Putin but don't underestimate Donald Trump's ability to make deals. And tough deals at that. The most important thing we have to understand is that if this agreement demonstrates any weakness or loss for Ukraine, we will all lose," the Finnish president summarized.

Earlier, Alexander Stubb said that Europe should adopt its own plan for ending Russia's war against Ukraine and demonstrate it to the American side. Otherwise, European countries may not get a seat at the negotiating table.

At the summit in the UK, the leaders agreed on several important steps to support Ukraine. Among the key decisions are the continuation of military aid to Ukraine and increased economic pressure on Russia.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, on March 2, a summit of European leaders was held in London to discuss the security system on the continent and future security guarantees for Ukraine. The UK expressed hope that the meeting would bring Ukraine closer to establishing a just and sustainable peace.
